ISIS claimed responsibility for an IED attack two days ago targeting a Russian army patrol near the city of Deir Ezzor in eastern Syria, killing a Russian major general and wounding two other soldiers.

Isis said on the Telegram website that “a Russian army patrol took place in a minefield east of the city of Sokhna, eastern Syria, resulting in the death of a brigade officer and wounding others when an explosive device exploded on them.”

The statement added that members of the terrorist organization targeted in the same region a leader of the pro-Moscow “National Defense” militia who was with his companions “when an explosive device exploded on a vehicle they were traveling”, resulting in “his death, along with a number of his bodyguards.”

And Moscow had announced the death of one of its generals in the explosion of a “homemade explosive device” Tuesday when a Russian convoy crossed near Deir Ezzor, noting that the attack also resulted in the injury of two Russian soldiers.

The Russian Ministry of Defense said in a statement that the device exploded while the Russian convoy was returning after a humanitarian operation near the city of Deir Ezzor, resulting in the injury of three soldiers, one of whom was a “senior military advisor with the rank of general” who soon died of his injury.
