Pompeo takes up officially US State Department as successor toTillerson
The CIA chief, Mike Pompeo, served as secretary of state, replacing Rex Tilerson, after Congress approved by 57 votes to 42.
US President Donald Trump was pleased to appoint Pompeo to the sensitive position and said in a statement “A talented national with a talent and intelligence like Mike at the head of the State Department is a major asset of our country at this critical moment in our history.”
Trump added “He will always put America’s interests first, he has my trust, he has my support.”
Pompeo said “I look forward to serve the American people and to start work immediately.” Shortly after his confirmation as foreign minister, he immediately left for Brussels to attend a meeting of NATO foreign ministers on Friday, later to visit Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Israel
