Italian European Parliament President David Sassoli dies at age 65

Italian European Parliament President David Sassoli died in a hospital in his country at the age of 65 at dawn Tuesday in a hospital in his home country of Italy, his spokesman Roberto Coello said, after suffering from the disease.

“David Sassoli died on January 11 at 1:15 a.m. at the Oncology Reference Center in Aviano, Italy, where he has been treating” since the end of December, Quilllow tweeted.

“The location and time of the funeral will be announced in the next few hours,” he said.

Quillow announced On Monday afternoon that Sassoli had been in hospital since December 26th “due to serious complications caused by an immune system defect,” noting that the President of the European Parliament had subsequently cancelled all his official activities.

Sasoli, who has suffered from leukemia in the past, was hospitalized at the end of September after suffering from pneumonia, which kept him out of Parliament for several weeks.

The late was a member of the Center-Left Alliance of Socialists and Progressive Democrats, the second largest parliamentary bloc in the European Parliament after the center-right European People’s Party.

The European Parliament is scheduled to hold a session next Tuesday to elect a new president to succeed Sassali.
