Indonesia’s most turbulent volcano erupted again on Saturday, sending plumes of ash into the air and sending lava flows and debris down its slopes, no injuries were reported.
The head of the Yogyakarta Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation, “Hank Hamida”, said that a torrent of rocks fell on the slopes of Mount Merapi before dawn, and that clouds of hot ash rose about 200 meters in the air while the mountain was making loud noises.
And he added that the volcano has unleashed hot ash clouds at least eight times since the morning, as well as a series of pyroclastic flows, a mixture of rocks, debris, lava and gases, which reached nearly two kilometers down its slopes.
The 2,968-meter-high volcano is located on the densely populated island of Java near the ancient city of Yogyakarta, and it is the most active of dozens of Indonesian volcanoes and has erupted frequently recently.
The Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation in Indonesia advised villagers living on the slopes of Merapi to stay within 5 kilometers of the crater and be aware of the dangers of lava.
The last major eruption of Merapi volcano in 2010 killed 347 people.
And Indonesia is located on the Pacific Ring of Fire, a vast region prone to colliding with tectonic layers, causing frequent earthquakes and strong seismic activity.
