The Democratic Union Party (PYD) issued a statement to public opinion, on the occasion of the seventeenth anniversary of the March 12 uprising, denouncing the Syrian regime’s attempt to obliterate the Kurdish identity and sow sectarian division among the Syrian people, and affirmed that the March 12 uprising was the beginning of the democratic nation and peaceful coexistence between the components of northern and eastern Syria.

The statement read:

“Seventeen years have passed since 12 March 2004, with all its bitterness, the Syrian Baathist regime and a handful of those in Baathist ideology trying to sow discord and animosity between Kurds and Arabs in the city of Qamishlo with the aim of striking the components with each other in an attempt to obliterate the Kurdish identity of the presence in Rojava and Syria, creating discord and sectarian division among the Syrian people, where dozens of Kurds were killed and hundreds arrested in the basements of the security services.”

“On the 17th anniversary of the Uprising of March 12, 2004, in which the Kurdish people rose up to lift the injustice inflicted on them, carried the flame of the uprising to end tyranny and during its uprising broke the barriers of fear and oppression to extract their rights, we bow to the martyrs and all the martyrs of the revolution of northern and eastern Syria,” the party said in a statement.

“We, the General Council of the PYD Democratic Union party on the painful anniversary of this intifada, condemn and denounce in the strongest terms the methods used by the Syrian regime, which stems from the Baathist mentality, which is unique in dealing with national issues, especially at this stage that Syria is going through and is being torn apart by the Turkish state and its mercenaries, and we affirm that such repressive police methods do not serve any democratic solution to Syria,” the statement said.

“We also affirm that the Uprising of March 12, 2004 in northern and eastern Syria led by the Kurdish people, was the beginning of the implementation of the democratic nation’s project, the brotherhood of peoples and the peaceful coexistence between the components of northern and eastern Syria, “Arabs, Kurds and Assyrians” to respond to the Syrian regime’s attempts to “divide and rule.”

“We stress that the solution in Syria lies in the dialogue between the Syrian national forces to reach democratic projects such as the Democratic Self-Administration Project, which has been confirmed by the experiences since its implementation in northern and eastern Syria as a viable project in Syria as an ideal solution to the complex Syrian conflict,” the party concluded.

On 12/03/2004, the Syrian regime massacred the Kurdish people in the city of Qamishlo, in which 30 civilians were killed in the cities of Al Jazeera” Dirk, Sri Kanieh, Hasaka, Qamishlu, in addition to Afrin province and Aleppo city.
