A strong earthquake hit New Zealand this morning, measuring 8.1 on the Richter scale, the largest in a series of earthquakes that hit the region over several hours, including two previous earthquakes measuring 7.4 and 7.3.
Thousands of people in New Zealand have been forced to evacuate and “tsunami” warnings “are being warned around the world, but they do not appear to cause significant injuries or damage as they were struck in distant surroundings.
New Zealand civil defence authorities have asked people in some coastal areas to immediately reach elevated areas. They said a devastating tsunami was possible, and waves could reach 3 meters (10 feet).
“Jennifer Eccles”, a seismologist at the University of Auckland, said the earthquake was at the top end of the scale for those surveyed only by the ocean crust on Earth.
In 2011, a 6.3-magnitude earthquake struck Christchurch, killing 185 people and destroying much of the city centre.
