Selava Omar –

In his first tweet on his Twitter account regarding U.S. bombing of Iranian positions in Eastern Syria, Middle East and North Africa, Coordinator” Brett McGurk” confirmed that, the U.S. airstrikes in Eastern Syria were directed by U.S. President” Joe Biden”, with the aim of halting the escalation of the general situation in both eastern Syria and Iraq.

“These strikes have been allowed in response to recent attacks against U.S. and coalition forces in Iraq, and the continuing threats of these attacks,” McGurk said.

“Specifically, the strikes destroyed several installations located at a border control point used by a number of Iranian-backed armed groups, including Hezbollah brigades and Sayyid al-Shuhada,” he said.

“This proportionate military response was conducted in conjunction with diplomatic actions, including, consultation with coalition partners, and the process sends an unequivocal message: President Biden will act to protect U.S. personnel and coalition forces,” he said.

“At the same time, we acted in a deliberate manner aimed at halting the escalation of the general situation in both eastern Syria and Iraq,” McGurk said.

U.S. warplanes launched raids on positions of pro-Iranian groups in Syria on Thursday, killing a number of pro-Iranian elements.

U.S. bombing targeted facilities in the town of Al-Bukamal in Deir ez-Zor in Eastern Syria belonging to Iranian-backed groups that had previously launched missile attacks on U.S. facilities in Iraq, including the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad.
