U.S. warplanes launched airstrikes on pro-Iranian group positions in Syria, killing 17 militants.
The airstrike targeted facilities in the eastern Syrian town of Al-Bukamal belonging to Iranian-backed groups that had previously launched missile attacks on U.S. facilities in Iraq, including the U.S. embassy in Baghdad, a U.S. official said.
U.S. Defense Secretary “Lioyd Austin” revealed that, the airstrike on “militias” in Syria was his recommendation, and confirmed earlier what was said earlier about a “timely response.”
“I trust that the building targeted in Syria is being used by the militias responsible for the recent attacks,” the Defense Secretary said.
The Pentagon announced that, the Air Force had launched a direct strike against a site belonging to Iranian-backed groups inside Syria on Thursday, Media Sources said.
The U.S. air strike “was carried out with high accuracy against HezbAllah brigades and The Syed al-Shuhada Brigades backed by Tehran inside Syrian territory,” the Pentagon said in a statement issued by his spokesman John Kirby’s office.
“At the direction of President Joe Biden, U.S. forces carried out air strikes against the infrastructure of Iranian-backed groups in eastern Syria,” the statement said.
The strikes were in response to recent attacks targeting U.S. and coalition forces in Iraq.
The U.S. airstrikes “were carried out with diplomatic measures, including consultation with allies, and are therefore a clear message that Biden is committed to defending Americans and allied forces,” the statement said.
A Pentagon official told reporters Thursday evening that a series of military targets were completely destroyed after intelligence was available that the militant group was planning to carry out missile attacks against U.S. forces positions deployed in Iraq.
“The target group inside Syria receives direct instructions and support from the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, and has a long history of carrying out terrorist attacks against U.S. interests,” the official said.
“The United States reserves the right to self-defense and deter any Iranian threat, whether in Syria or abroad,” he said.
The strike was the Biden administration’s first military operation against Iranian groups, as it seeks to resume a European-brokered dialogue with Tehran aimed at reviving the 2015 nuclear deal.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said on Friday morning that, overnight raids by U.S. fighter jets on positions in eastern Syria along the border with Iraq killed at least 17 Iranian loyalists.
