Us President Donald Trump has agreed to declare a state of emergency in Washington, D.C., hours after authorities warned of possible security threats during the president-elect’s inauguration next week, the White House announced.
The Pentagon had earlier authorized an increase in the number of military personnel deployed in the capital from 6,200 National Guard personnel currently deployed in Washington to 10,000 by the end of the week, with the possibility of supporting some 5,000 military personnel on inauguration day on November 20, bringing the total number of military personnel to 15,000.
Since last week, Trump supporters have been circulating on social media calls for demonstrations across the country, including in the federal capital, from January 17, in calls for protest scares that have raised fears of further unrest and violence during the president-elect’s inauguration next week.
