The Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives announced Sunday evening that she was ready to begin impeachment proceedings against outgoing President Donald Trump and stressed that Trump is a threat to the Democratic Constitution.

“We will move forward with impeachment proceedings in the House unless Trump is removed under the 25th Amendment to the Constitution, and they will first vote on a resolution this week calling on Vice President Mike Pence and the government to remove President Donald Trump from office before moving to accountability,” Pelosi said.

“This president represents an imminent threat to the Constitution and democracy,” she said.

“As the days go by, the ongoing aggression against our democracy, perpetrated by this president, and the immediate need for action are even more egregious,” she said.
Pelosi said in a letter that the House of Representatives is scheduled to vote Monday or Tuesday on a resolution urging Pence to use the 25th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which allows him and the government to remove the president if he is unable to perform his official duties, adding that the House “will then proceed with accountability legislation.”

The Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives earlier asked her Democratic colleagues in the House to prepare to return to Washington this week, as U.S. President Donald Trump, who shut down his personal Twitter account and was rejected by a number of Republican officials, is facing a new effort by Democrats to remove him after the Capitol was stormed by his supporters and supporters.

“We will continue to meet with members, constitutional experts and others,” Pelosi said in a letter to Democratic members published Saturday, according to The Hill, after receiving comments on how to respond to Wednesday’s riots, adding, “I urge you to be ready to return to Washington this week.”

In an hours-long telephone conference with the House of Representatives caucus on Friday, lawmakers expressed near-unanimous support for holding Trump accountable.

“Pelosi” threatened to hold Trump accountable for a second time unless he resigned immediately, a move unlikely to be made by a president whose behavior is challenging and confrontational.

Pelosi also asked members to draft legislation aimed at activating the 25th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which would allow the president to be removed if he became unable to carry out his official duties.

To activate the 25th constitutional amendment, Vice President Mike Pence, and the majority of the Trump administration must declare him unable to serve as president.
