The American newspaper “Washington Post” reported, on Thursday, that the Turkish judiciary’s continued pursuit of activists and opponents reveals how President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has fallen into the gutter while presenting himself as a “model of democracy.”

The newspaper reported that when Erdogan came to power, he portrayed himself as a person leading the “democratic march” in order to join the European Union.

But over time, Erdogan has slowly morphed into something like leaders holding the “fist of power” in their countries.

The newspaper pointed out that the Erdogan era witnessed the entry of thousands of political prisoners into prisons.

The “Washington Post” criticized what it considered the State Department’s condoning of these practices issued by the Turkish authorities during Erdogan’s era.
