An American newspaper: Pompeo threatens to close the US embassy in Baghdad

The “Washington Post” newspaper said that US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo warned Iraqi officials in an exclusive meeting that Washington would close its embassy in Baghdad if the Iraqi government did not move to stop Iranian-backed groups’ attacks against Americans.

And this request creates a great dilemma for the new Iraqi Prime Minister, Mustafa Al-Kazemi, who has so far been a favorite of the Trump administration, as he wants to rein in the pro-Iranian forces, but not in a process that leads to a political disaster in his country, according to what was reported by the American “Washington Post” newspaper.

And if “Pompeo” implemented his threat and closed the embassy to protect the Americans, Iran and its allies might claim a major propaganda victory, but the closure may also be a prelude to intense US air strikes against Iranian groups, as Iraq is where the confrontation between the United States and Iran could explode in the next few weeks, This creates the “October surprise” before the US presidential election.

And in turn, Iran has been wary of provoking the Trump administration directly in the campaign season, preferring to operate on the undeniable Iraqi battlefield.

For his part, a State Department official said, “We believe that Al-Kazimi wants to do the right thing, but he will have to do more faster,” adding, “There is a clear danger to the lives of Americans if these attacks continue.”

Violence by Iranian-backed groups has escalated in recent weeks despite Al-Kazemi’s promises to crack down on them.

And So far this month, there have been 25 attacks on convoys transporting supplies to US or coalition facilities, on the Green Zone where the US embassy is located, or on Baghdad International Airport.
