Next week, US Secretary of State “Mike Pompeo” intends to go to Greece on a visit during which he expresses his country’s support for Athens in its border dispute with Ankara, as his ministry announced Thursday.

The US State Department said in a statement that Pompeo’s visit to Greece falls within the framework of a European tour that he will undertake between September 27 and October 2 and will also include Italy, where he will also have a stop in the Vatican during which he will discuss the file of religious freedoms, and Croatia.

And on his second visit in less than a year to Greece, the US Secretary will head to Thessaloniki (in the north) and Crete, where he will meet with the Greek Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

The US State Department stated that while in Greece, Pompeo would stress Washington and Athens’ commitment to “enhancing security, peace and prosperity in the eastern Mediterranean,” and “will celebrate the strongest Greek-American relations in decades.”

While in Crete, the US secretary will visit the NATO naval base in “Souda” Bay.

Pompeo visited Cyprus two weeks ago, where he urged Turkey to stop the activities that cause tension in the eastern Mediterranean, calling on all parties to pursue diplomatic means.

And there is a dispute between Turkey on the one hand and Greece and Cyprus on the other hand over oil and gas resources in the eastern Mediterranean, which raises fears of a more intense conflict.

Where the dispute escalated on August 10, when Turkey sent a ship to explore for natural gas and warships to waters contested with Greece, the tension peaked in late August, when the two countries held parallel military exercises.
