On Wednesday, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo affirmed that UN sanctions will be automatically re-imposed on Iran this week, and that the United States will ensure that all countries of the world apply and respect these sanctions.

“The United States will do what it has always done, and will bear its share of the responsibility,” Pompeo said during a joint press conference with his British counterpart, Dominic Raab, at the ministry’s headquarters in Washington.

“We will do everything necessary to ensure that these sanctions are applied and respected,” he added.

His comments come nearly a month after the UN Security Council rejected US-led efforts to extend the arms embargo on Iran, which is due to expire in October.

In a related context, the US envoy to the Iranian file, Elliott Abrams, said, last Wednesday, to reporters that “all the sanctions imposed by the United Nations on Iran will be re-imposed at the end of this week.

He added that the arms embargo imposed on Iran would be extended “indefinitely” and that many activities related to Tehran’s nuclear and ballistic programs would be subject to sanctions.

The American diplomat added, “We expect all member states of the United Nations to fully implement the United Nations sanctions,” considering that this matter “will have a very large impact.”

“Abrams” warned that President Donald Trump’s administration will issue “announcements” on Saturday, Monday and next week regarding what it intends to do to impose the application of these sanctions, despite the isolation that the United States suffers from in this file.
