Trump expresses his concern about the tension between Ankara and Athens and invites them for dialogue

US President Donald Trump spoke by phone with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, the White House said in a statement on Wednesday.

In the statement, the White House indicated that Trump expressed his concern about the recent tensions between Greece and Turkey, calling on the two NATO partners for dialogue.

On Wednesday, Trump discussed with his Turkish counterpart, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, bilateral and regional issues, including the Mediterranean.

Tensions have escalated between Turkey and Greece since Ankara sent the survey ship “Oroç President” to disputed waters in the eastern Mediterranean this month, in a move Athens described as illegal.

And there are severe differences between Turkey and Greece over the sovereignty of oil and gas resources in the region, based on differing views on the extension of the continental shelf of each of the two countries in the waters that are spread by islands, most of which are Greek.
