US President Donald Trump announced, on Wednesday, that the United States will activate in the UN Security Council a “snapback” mechanism, in order to re-impose all UN sanctions on Iran.

Trump said: “Today I asked Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to notify the United Nations Security Council that the United States intends to re-impose practically all UN sanctions on Iran that are pending until today.”

And the “Snapback” mechanism allows the re-imposition of all UN sanctions on Iran, if a state party to the nuclear agreement concluded with Tehran in 2015 asks for Tehran’s violation of the obligations stipulated in the agreement.

Trump stressed in a press conference that Iran “will never get a nuclear weapon,” referring to Tehran’s violation of the nuclear agreement.

On the other hand, Pompeo said that Washington would hold China and Russia responsible if they tried to prevent the re-imposition of UN sanctions on Iran.
