Iran refused to pay compensation to Ukraine International Airlines for the plane shot down near Tehran, arguing that the plane was registered by a European insurance company, not an Iranian one.

Reuters reports, referring to the statement of the head of the Central Insurance Organization of Iran, Golamrez Soleimani, “The Ukrainian plane is insured by European companies in Ukraine, not Iranian ones. Therefore, those European companies must pay compensation,” according to his description.

And president “Volodymyr Zelensky” said in February that Ukraine was not satisfied with the amount of compensation Iran had provided to the families of Ukrainians killed in the accident, Ukrainian officials said that Ukraine will do its utmost to maximize the amount of compensation.

Last month, Iranian and Ukrainian officials held talks on compensation, with another round scheduled for October.

And it is worth of noting that The Iranian Revolutionary Guard shot down the Ukrainian International Airlines plane with a surface-to-air missile on January 8, right after the plane took off from Tehran, while Tehran later admitted it was a “catastrophic mistake” by the forces, who were on high alert, during a confrontation with the United States.
