Greek military sources said that Turkish warplanes violated Greek airspace dozens of times “in one day”, in a new escalation of the conflict between the two countries in the eastern Mediterranean region.

The sources quoted by the Greek newspaper “Kathimerini”, indicated that 8 Turkish military aircraft flew illegally over Greek islands in the Aegean Sea, on Wednesday.

The newspaper pointed out that the Turkish aircraft, which are 6 “F-16” and two “CN-235S”, penetrated 33 times the Greek airspace.

She added that the Greek authorities had succeeded in identifying the Turkish planes and chasing them according to the international rules of engagement.

It is reported that political and military tensions between Athens and Ankara have escalated during the past months, after the latter sought to explore energy sources off the coast of Cyprus, and the two governments competed for regional rights in the Aegean Sea.
