Today, Thursday, Japan marked the 75th anniversary of the dropping of an American atomic bomb on the city of Hiroshima, but with a reduced number of attendees due to fears of the Corona virus.

About 880 participants, including survivors of the atomic bomb attack, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and representatives from more than 80 countries, observed a minute of silence, coinciding with the memory of its being dropped from a US grenade launcher on Hiroshima 75 years ago.

Before the ceremony, many people visited the park to offer prayers and flowers to those that suffered as a result of the bombing.

And the atomic bomb was dropped from an American bomber at 08:15 local time, the time it was dropped several decades ago.

The uranium bomb, weighing 4 tons, caused unprecedented damage in the city in western Japan, killing tens of thousands, most of them civilians, on the spot.

By the end of 1945, about 140,000 people, including thousands of Koreans and other non-Japanese, had died as a result of the bombing and its after-effects.

The mayor of Hiroshima, Kazumi Matsui, said during the annual event that 75 years after the nuclear attack, humanity is facing a new threat, namely the Corona virus.

“But with what we have learned from past tragedies, we have to be able to overcome this threat,” he added.
