Germany chancellor Angela Merkel said that Germany will continue to strive for a new partnership with Britain by the end of the year, but the European Union should also prepare for a sudden secession from 2021.

“The progress in the negotiations so far has been limited, if we describe it diplomatically,” Merkel told the European Parliament, whose rotating states are rotated by Germany and which is currently being held until the end of the year.

“We agreed with the United Kingdom to accelerate the course of the talks, I will continue to push for a good solution, but we also have to prepare for the scenario of not communicating an agreement,” she added.

It is reported that Britain left the European Union in January and is now in a transition period with the bloc in order to give the parties time to form a new relationship in everything from trade to security.
