Turkey has become one of the countries most affected by the spread of the Corona pandemic as it suffers from a rapid rise in the number of cases, with the number of confirmed cases reaching nearly 50,000 since the first case was diagnosed on 10 March.
But instead of tackling this troubling situation in the country, the Turkish parliament is busy discussing a law to release 90,000 criminals from prison – while keeping political prisoners locked up, and President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has struck multiple birds with one stone by proposing this bill in a time of crisis according to what Reported by The Washington Post.
The newspaper noted, that Erdogan is redirecting attention from the failed fight his government is waging against the spread of the Corona pandemic, and that, at least in part, would reduce the great risk that the virus could pose on prison inmates by reducing the number of people behind bars.
However, there are indications that this law will be used for its own political purposes. While some of his supporters will be released, while none of the tens of thousands of political prisoners in Turkey will be released.
