With their summit, the German Chancellor and the presidents of Russia, France and Turkey want to restart the peace process. The day after, the picture changes: the Turkish Air Force attacks and the IS also reports back.
One day after a summit on the peace process for Syria, Turkey shelled positions of the Kurdish YPG forces, which forms the backbone of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), in the east of Euphrates river one day after a summit on the peace process for Syria between Angela Merkel, Vladimir Putin, Emmanuel Macron and Recep Tayyip Erdogan. According to the state-owned Anadolu news agency, Turkish armed forces bombed barricades and positions “erected by the terrorist organization” in the Zor Magar region.
The Turkish armed forces attacked YPG to “stop terrorist activities”, Anadolu reported. So far, Turkey already occupied Afrin, al-Bab, Azaz, Dabiq, Jarabulus, Jindires, Raco and Shaykh al-Hadid at the west of the Euphrates river, but Erdogan has stated that it intends to extend its activities further east.
At the Istanbul summit on Saturday Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that his country would not tolerate “terrorist organisations” either on Turkey’s borders or in Syria. Erdogan’s meeting with Merkel, Macron and Putin ended with a decision to revive the peace process.
Meanwhile, the Islamic State (IS) has recaptured larger areas in eastern Syria. IS gained control of one of the largest oil fields in the country after the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) fighters withdrew.
For days, the IS and the Kurdish-led SDF have been fighting fierce battles in eastern Syria. According to the Syrian Human Rights Observatory, at least 68 SDF fighters have died since Friday in the most severe Islamist attack in months. The IS had withdrawn after the losses to some desert areas on the border between Syria and Iraq.
