Turkey faces pressure following Sochi Agreement implementation: expert
turkey faces huge pressure to ensure all Syrian radical opposition forces evacuate from the demilitarised zone in the province of Idlib as of Monday, experts said on Sunday.

On Oct. 10, Turkish defence ministry announced the complete withdrawal of heavy weapons from Idlib according to the schedule of the Sochi Agreement reached between Russia andTurkey last month.

Experts said that was the first and the easiest part of the agreement. Turkey’s limited influence on rebels and extremist terrorist groups will add uncertainties to the full execution of the agreement.

“In the future, if these militant groups feel that they are going to be dismantled, they are going to be cleansed from the region, they can show an unpredictable reaction towards the Turkish forces and the Russian forces,” said Burak Ozpek, assistant professor at the TOBB economy and technology university.

According to data provided by the Center for Middle Eastern Studies, there are 80,000 to 90,000 armed fighters and 30,000 extremists and terrorists in Idlib. Although some organizations have withdrawn, those foreign members in extremist organizations are the least willing to leave, according to a recent media report.

“The information coming from the ground shows us that most of these elements will withdraw with the agreement. But the foreign fighters, the radicals, they are ‘Muhajirins’, are against it,” said Oytun Orhan, coordinator of Syria studies at the Center for Middle Eastern Studies.
