US threatens another country with sanctions (CAATSA)
The State Department official said India would not be exempted from sanctions under the US Penal Code (CAATSA) that it would not be exempted if India bought the S-400 air defense system from Russia.
The United States has warned that India, which plans to buy an S-400 air defense system from Russia, will not lift sanctions its if the agreement is implemented.
“If India buys an S-400 air defense system from Russia, Iran and North Korea, it falls within the framework of the United States anti-US penal code,” a State Department official told the news website The Hindu. He said he would not be exempted from any sanctions imposed on any country engaged in “significant shopping” with Korea and Russia.
“We call on all our allies and partners to abandon the shopping that will result in CAATSA sanctions if they shop with Russia,” the official said.
Indian sources also said that the US administration was pressing India to reduce its defense cooperation with Russia for a while, while India expressed intentions to buy the S-400 publicly.
The State Department recently announced that India had requested $ 18 billion worth of equipment from the United States.
Russian President Vladimir Putin is expected to announce the S-400 deal during his two-day visit to India.
