US media sources said on Thursday that President Donald Trump ordered the Pentagon to prepare options to reduce its troops in South Korea,.
The New York Times quoted informed sources that the reduction of US troops was not meant to be a bargaining chip at the summit in late May or early June between Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un on Pyongyang’s nuclear weapons program.
But officials said an inter-Korean peace treaty could reduce the need for 23,500 US troops stationed on the Korean peninsula.
Officials said it was unlikely that US troops would be fully withdraw.
